Penny Powers gave an update on what DKG does as an organization - DKG is an honorary organization for the service of education. Education is threatened today - with distance learning because of Covid - 19 along with other problems occurring in our world. Many of us are far removed from how the classroom operates today. There are lots of immediate needs and we need to consider how we can help current educators. Alpha Sigma operates off a portion of our dues ($56 of membership dues is sent on to state and coordinating council) which means we keep less than $20. We pass all the Game Day earnings directly to Brinkley Heights. We need to be good stewards of our money and really consider new members to invite to participate. We also support Schools for Africa - funded by additional donations from members, as well as Books from Birth. We should wear our pins and use it as an opportunity to share with others what DKG means, which may help in recruiting new members. We used to have a grant available for higher education for a member or non-member. The number of applications has dwindled to none. Penny also gave a report of revenue and expenses: 2019 Revenue/income: 5,015 - Expenses of 5,018; 2018 Revenue/Income 4,350 - Expenses of $5,100; 2017 Revenue/income $4,400 - Expenses $4,450.
Deborah McDurmon - discussed that since the 2020 TN State Convention in June was cancelled due to COVID-19, the Special Events committee was unable to hold its annual Silent Auction. Money raised from the auction is used to fund the Beginning & Advanced Leadership Seminars, the Leadership Conference for Committee Planning, and other professional development activities. Therefore, the Special Events committee is asking for donations from chapters. These monetary donations can help local chapters earn points toward the Maycie Award. Points are awarded as follows $25 - 3 Maycie points, $50 - 5 Maycie points, $100 - 8 Maycie points. (Last year Alpha Sigma earned a Silver Maycie Award.) Sonja Glaser made a motion that we donate $100 from the chapter funds. Sue Mason seconded the motion. The motion was amended to have chapter members make donations to Trish to cover the cost. She will collect and add chapter money to reach $100. This July there is an opportunity to virtually attend DKG seminars through Zoom. If you would like to donate but did not attend the meeting please email Trish Stephenson at [email protected] and let her know how much you want to contribute. We passed an envelope to collect donations at the meeting.
Sonja Glaser brought up the idea to have a collection jar, and if you don’t wear your pin to the meeting, you can donate a dollar. This would be a fun way to encourage pin wearing and small donations to Schools for Africa. This would be an honor system and just for fun and encouragement.
Martha Baker passed around a thoughtful thank you note we received from the Brinkley Heights graduates. Deborah McDurmon also let us know about a nice thank you received from UNICEF/Schools for Africa for the approximate $85 we collected and sent in May.
The new officers were inducted; our 2020-2022 officers are Sonja Glaser, President; Deborah McDurmon, 1st VP, Debbie Wooley, 2nd VP; Courtney Page & Laura Evans, Recording Secretaries; Kelly Beach, Corresponding Secretary; Trish Stephenson, Treasurer; Laura Evans, Parliamentarian. Sue Mason acted as Installing Officer.
Deborah led the discussion on future programming for this next year. We brainstormed ways to meet and still adhere to social distancing requirements should they still be in effect. Potential locations might be Germantown Methodist Church, Germantown Park pavilion, Collierville Senior Citizens Center, a library meeting room.
We need a point person for the Special Projects committee to head up Brinkley Heights Game Day.
After much thoughtful discussion we have the following activities tentatively set for this next year:
July - Zoom meeting/fellowship (get creative from where you will Zoom - your home/patio or virtual location - and invite your pets
