Our September meeting was a “Fall Gathering” sponsored by the Coordinating Council and attended by representatives from all four chapters in Shelby County. The luncheon was held at Chickasaw Country Club. Our chapter had responsibility for getting the speaker and for printing the programs. Alpha Sigma had nine members to attend the luncheon (picture below with guest speaker).
Deborah McDurmon opened the meeting with a warm welcome and prayer. Carol Moling (Beta Gamma) followed with a brief commentary and explanation of the beautiful yellow roses that adorned the tables. The yellow rose is a symbol of woman’s suffrage, which was the topic of the keynote speaker, Paula F. Casey. Paula is an honorary member of DKG, co-founder of the Tennessee Woman Suffrage Heritage Trail and contributing author of the published book The Perfect 36: Tennessee Delivers Woman Suffrage. She spoke about the 19th Amendment and of local people instrumental in the 72-year struggle for American women to win the right to vote. She explainied that Tennessee was the last state that could possibly ratify in 1920. She also mentioned that a city’s art is the reflection of that city. With that introduction, Paula talked about the “Suffrage Heritage Trail” project, still in progress, that is striving to place sculptured monuments across the state to reflect the suffrage efforts of Tennessee. The remaining part of the program included Mary Jo Wilson (Alpha Lambda), who encouraged everyone to get involved in DKG at the state level by serving on various committees. After closing remarks by Laura Evans, the traditional DKG anthem was sung before dismissal.
