Alpha Sigma enjoyed a festive Christmas brunch and meeting in the lovely home of Courtney Page on Saturday, Dec. 8. Many toys were generously donated to BHUA. Thanks to all Santa’s helpers! President Deborah McDurmon offered a suggestion to consider changing the date/format for next year’s December meeting so as not to conflict with the Tour of Homes. She handed out the minutes of our last meeting and gave us these dates to remember: Founders’ day will be celebrated April 27 and Xi State will be May 30 - June 1, 2019.
Trish Stephenson passed out updated Program schedules. She also presented a PowerPoint presentation outlining the Schools for Africa Program that DKG has supported for 20 years. We discussed how our donations of change can bring about change in 13 African countries through the UNICEF charities. Our contributions provide quality basic education and related needs of girls, orphans and other vulnerable children in underdeveloped countries. UNICEF programs include training for teachers, school supplies and uniforms. Check out the UNICEF website for other opportunities to help, even by putting down your phone to save kids’ lives! TAP.UNICEFUSA.org supplies clean water in exchange for time spent off your devices. The UNICEF Kid Power app helps buy clothes for kids in coordination with Disney, Star Wars and Target. We discussed other ways to support youth, particularly girls, locally and globally.
Sonja Glaser typed up some fun food wisdom attendees came up with at the Arts Retreat. Sonja also moved that we spend some of our chapter’s grant money to complete the last BHUA teacher 'wish list’ by purchasing 10 Webster's Dictionary & Thesaurus for Students: With Full Color World Atlas for Rachel Miller-Haven. Trish seconded her move and we voted unanimously to make that Christmas wish come true.
Thanks again to all for the delicious food and fun toys for Brinkley!!
Happy Holidays and much love,
substitute Laura Evans
