Dear Sister Friends,
I am proud to celebrate International Women's Day sharing great news about the most amazing women I know - you!
First I'd like to honor and congratulate our sister, Lou Ann Vaught, recently named Lakeland School System's Teacher of the Year!!! I know her to be brilliant, creative, hard working, and all heart. She's teaching 5th grade now, has also taught 2nd & 3rd grades, Apex, and even high school at St Jude's Children's Hospital. I always point with pride to the fact she was my student teacher - should have been the other way around! Way back then she was already a master organizer and implementer. She is "that teacher"; first to arrive, last to leave, on every committee, and every child's favorite teacher. Kudos and good luck in regional competition, Lou. It is an absolute joy to call you sister and friend! You have always inspired those around you.
Thanks to Deborah McDurmon for putting out the handy meeting reminders! She makes them so colorful and cute that they look great on my fridge. This month we are putting on the crucial fundraising event of the year: Game Day is March 20th from 10 to 3. Please reserve your spot (or an entire table for all your girls) with Betty Only. The cost is $20 per person and the money goes to support Brinkley Heights Urban Academy. Sorry some of you are working, but you can still send a donation to Betty. I hope you can come because it is so much fun. Please be sure to bring a card table, a game and a door prize. If you can help with lunch and snacks, please contact Phyllis Agnew. There's a running list of what she needs on FB. Our usual chef, Brenda West, is having cataract surgery so all of us need to step up. Sisters, let's make a special effort this year in honor of Betty Only, she's been having some health issues and even had to be hospitalized for a couple of days last week for dehydration. She would surely appreciate your thoughts and prayers. Don't we always say, "Let me know if there is anything I can do." The truth is that BHUA and this event are VERY near and dear to Betty's heart. I'm sure that a successful Game Day would lift her spirits, ease her mind and help to heal her!
Betty also wanted me to remind you that it is time to register for Xi State Convention, June 1-3! There is a good discount for registering before May 1st. The form is in your February Xi State News. and online. If you want to go ahead and send it in; request St. Luke's dorm and put down Betty and I as your roommates - we can get a suite! Also, please volunteer to serve as a page and a table hostess. If you are coming to Game Day, bring your form and we can send them in together. It is a great little girls' getaway and everyone speaks teacher there! The workshops are informative, they feed us like queens and the campus is inspiring. The trip is always an adventure so ride with us or caravan ... I can't promise we won't get lost, but I promise you'll feel like a college kid again!
Founder's Day Luncheon will be celebrated at Ridgeway Country Club on April 22 at 11am. Alpha Sigma is in charge of installing Chapter Officers and recognizing members with 30, 40 and 50 years of service. Sounds serious, so you know I am going to need some help pulling that off! The menu is salad, baked chicken or veggie lasagna, chocolate cake or cheesecake and coffee or tea. The cost is $25. Put it on your calendar and send a check to Penny Powers by April 10th. Be sure to let her know if you want chicken or veggie lasagna. Also let me know if you or someone you know has 30, 40 or 50 years in DKG. You will definitely want to attend!
On that note, I will let you get back to being fierce, fabulous women making a difference in the lives of children every day! (Plus now I am craving cake?!)
Thank you for your time and your participation!
Love,
Laura
