“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” and the busiest, and the most stressful, but the happiest, and for some, the saddest. It’s a time for reflection and a time of looking forward to a new year. For DKG, that also means a new fiscal year, July 1 - June 30.
As I reflect on our activities these past few months, I take great pride in our chapter’s contributions of teaching supplies and books to Brinkley Heights Urban Academy as they began another school year. September brought an awareness of the hard work (and shenanigans!) of state government that affect teachers in Tennessee, and our event was later published in the Collierville Herald and the XI State News. In October we were able to welcome five new members and one transfer from Georgia to our chapter. What a blessing! November weather was warm, cold, rainy, even snowy; yet we were reminded to be constant in our efforts to maintain practical exercise routines and to eat healthy during the holidays. December brought our focus back to children, especially with toy donations so that parents of BHAU could “Santa shop” for their children and a “Schools in Africa” slide presentation that raised awareness of student needs we take for granted. We’ve been a busy chapter, and you have been generous with your time, your talents, and your resources!
So what opportunities await us in 2019? Community service, personal growth and responsibility, fundraising, inspiration and future planning, and of course, fellowship and comaradarie. There’s more to do, additional benefits to reap, and a variety of ways that we can make a difference in our own lives, the lives of children, and the community at large. What a wonderful gift we are given as DKG educators!
