Wow! Our September meeting was so entertaining and enlightening. Our speaker, State Representative Kevin Vaughn, revealed so many things about himself, even the fact that he has a rodeo bull in training in Texas. Who expected that? Regardless of your views on politics, it was hard not to be amused by his antics, one in which he told about singing a solo in a televised meeting on the senate floor in response to being “hazed”. He is obviously a good sport, but also a serious politician as evidenced by the awards he’s received as a Freshman politician. Thanks to Brenda West for hosting the meeting and to those who provided soup, sandwiches, and desserts.
Our goal for supplying the Brinkley Heights teachers with items on their wish list is reaching completion. Because we are educators, we understand the need for a different kind of tool needed to do our jobs. So, thankfully, with the help of friends from the community, we were able to supply seven sets of classroom books, two class sets of calculators, composition books, dry-erase markers, art supplies, playground toys, etc. That was a significant project, and one in which we can feel very gratified.
Three of our members attended the Arts Retreat in Jackson. Laura Evans, Sonja Glaser and Betty Only all agreed it was a fun girls’ trip and a very pleasurable event. They attended classes that allowed them to try their hands at water painting, calligraphy, and crocheting. A surprising highlight was the topic of collecting buttons, complete with displays of old buttons from the 1700-1800s and collections of themed buttons such as school icon buttons, etc. Do I even mention the laughter and comradery they enjoyed? The art retreats are held every two years.
October is also a very busy month. The new member orientation (Oct. 6) and initiation brunch (Oct. 20) are coming up, and deadline dates for Chapter By-Laws & Rules, the Strategic Action Plan, yearbook submission, and collection of dues is upon us. It becomes evident that Alpha Sigma has a lot going on. Don’t be a bystander. Get involved.
There are still a few more spots available for the Beginning Leadership Management Seminar at Henry Horton State Park in Chapel Hill on October 19 and 20. To take advantage of this opportunity, look for the application available on the Xi State website under FORMS. This is a fantastic way to network with other DKG members from across the state and to polish your leadership skills.
It’s apparent that we are more than just a social club; we have purpose! Don’t be left out.
