Making Changes, Making a Difference
August 1, 2019
“Changes are inevitable. Changes are constant.” What a conundrum! At the end of May, six members from our chapter (Betty, Laura, Sonja, Trish, Linda P., Deborah) trekked to Xi State where we learned about the many changes taking place within DKG at the state level. In June, Trish attended the International Conference at Ashville, NC, and returned with new information about changes at the international level. You’ll be hearing more about the changes as the year progresses and how these changes affect us. Here is just a sampling that directly impact our chapter:
- Our organization is no longer Xi State but is now The Tennessee State Organization of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (hereby referred to as the Tennessee State Organization).
- Any female student who is actively seeking a degree in education and is enrolled in her last two years of study at an academic institution qualifies for Collegiate membership.
- An individual becomes a member of the Society when she pays her dues.
- Chapters are no longer required to have an induction ceremony but may elect to do so.
- The membership year is July 1 - June 30. Therefore, annual dues must be paid to the chapter treasurer by June 30 (not Oct. 30) for the following fiscal year.
- Chapter minutes must include the names of members terminated, including the reason and date of termination.
Despite these changes, some things never change, such as eating when we meet, and meeting to eat. In the month of June, 15 of us met at the Silver Caboose in Collierville for a home-style meal. (Chapter directories were distributed, but if you didn’t get one, you may request one from Deborah.) In July, five members and a guest met at Global Café in the Crosstown Concourse for exotic Syrian, Sudanese, and Venezuelan cuisine. The food is prepared by food entrepreneurs who are immigrant refugees. It is quite good and is served up with cultural enrichment. Southern Living calls Global Café “The Little Memphis Food Hall That Could.” And it does!
If you’ve been missing out, join us August 22 for finger foods and the Team Read Program by Jackie Flaum in the Fellowship Hall of Germantown United Methodist Church, 5:30 p.m. This will be our first official meeting of the new fiscal year. Jackie will acquaint us with the reading tutor program and will show us how to get involved. Why settle for making only changes when you can make a big difference!
Making a positive difference is what we educators are all about. Teachers are typically natural born leaders, and you have an opportunity to show off your leadership skills. New chapter officers will be installed April 4th. If you are interested in taking on the challenge, please notify Laura (Nominating Committee Chair)of your willingness to serve in an office: president, co-vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, treasurer.
Happy New Fiscal Year!
