“Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” John Maxwell

August! Where did the summer go? It is time for school again. School? Whatever, we are doing school this year, we as teachers are supposed to teach. Whether we are currently in the classroom or not, our “DNA” urges us to teach. The question on everyone’s mind is, “How”? One way is by supporting all the teachers, systems, and parents out there whether we agree or disagree. Be there for them. We do not know what is ahead, but we will encourage and support. As our DKG purpose # 1 says, we are united in genuine fellowship.
Our very own Deborah McDurmon has worked diligently to provide Zoom training for us so we can stay connected with each other and possibly connect with others. Our training will be August 25 at the Senior Center in Collierville. If we wear our masks and sanitize, we should be able to comply with our VII Purpose and grow personally. Our Coordinating Council met August 13, via Zoom.
I want to encourage you to check out DKG Society International US Forum’s Facebook page. They post occasionally so they will not overwhelm you. One of their recent posts had a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt that made me think of our Delta Kappa Gamma Society’s Purpose # III regarding advancing women in education. First Lady Roosevelt said, “For our own success to be real, it must contribute to the success of others.” I believe Deborah is doing this in her upcoming Zoom training.
On August 19, 1920, the 19th Amendment was passed granting women the right to vote. Both of my grandmothers were born before women had the right to vote. This right took decades to accomplish. Suffrages worked tirelessly but sadly some were heckled and jailed. Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment. Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for female education said, “We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced.” As our DKG Purpose # VII proclaims, we must stay informed of current economic, social, political, and educational issues so we can participate in a world society.
Stay healthy, informed, involved, and safe!
