September shows us that change can be beautiful! We can tell autumn is near as the days grow shorter, the temperature gets cooler, and the mosquitoes are gone! Yet, we are missing our football, festivals, and our indoor chapter meetings. Since we are a smart and creative group of teachers, we had a meeting in the grove of trees at W. C. Johnson Park in Collierville. We sat with masks on in a giant circle as we conducted our meeting. The spot Deborah picked was perfect under the shade of the tall oaks and the solitude from most interfering noises. The temperature had dropped to a very pleasant 70s and the sun dappled through the tall trees as we held our meeting.
Betty Only gave us an uplifting and informative program on our Alpha Sigma history. The women she discussed changed education for the better both locally and afar. They were women we can be proud to call society sisters. Judy Sandlin provided Courtney Page with an article for our “Inspiration”. The article was about Lieutenant Heather Penny, a pilot on 9-11-01. And since the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we paid tribute to her life. Justice Ginsburg was a teacher at Rutgers Law School and at Columbia Law School before sitting of the bench. Penny and Ginsburg had teacher hearts. We women have an important place in society, and I am grateful for the Delta Kappa Gamma founders. Our mission states, “The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional growth of women educators and excellence in education.” Afterwards, we ate our lunches with our society sisters while enjoying each other’s company and desserts supplied by Courtney and Deborah. We discussed the current state of education in society and our need to stay involved.
Our thanks go to these servants of the Tennessee State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma International from our chapter Laura Evans and Trish Stephenson. Laura is serving as Area 9 Director and on the Chapter Strengthening and Personnel committees. Trish is serving on the Constitution and By Laws committee.
Be aware of upcoming events provide by our Tennessee State Organization of DKG. “Powerful PowerPoint Presentations” on October 3; “DKG Goes Country” on October 11; and “Facebook For Fraidy Cats” on October 17. Applications are due to Nominations Committee on October 31.
October meeting! The plans are for an author as our speaker. Bring books to swap.
“Life with its rules, its obligations, and its freedoms, is like a sonnet. You’re given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself.” Madeline L’Engle.
Let us remember to write our sonnets with strength and grace. The women we discussed in our last meeting wrote theirs beautifully.
